Volunteer wardens should be supplied with clothing and other equipment that keeps them warm and dry, and easily identifiable by the public and authorities.
Items usually worn by volunteer flood wardens include:
- Warm, waterproof high viz jacket and trousers
- Rechargeable head torch
- Whistle
- Disposable latex-free gloves
Remembering that flooding does not only happen in winter, some flood groups also keep a supply of lightweight high viz tabards as an alternative to jackets.

Community Volunteer Booklet – PPE Equipment
This booklet provides further details on PPE and how to take care of it.

PPE Record Sheet
The Co-ordinator will need to issue and keep track of equipment. Download a simple record template.
How will I fund the PPE required by my group?
Some local authorities, charities and utility companies have a fund to assist local flood groups in purchasing PPE and other equipment. The link below is to the scheme run in Devon by Devon Communities Together and is a good example of how these work:

Alternatively you might be eligible for a small grant from the Big Lottery. More information can be found on their website:
